The Basis

At its core, this project is intended to be a collection of photos and stories documenting the transplant experience; a resource for both the transplant recipient, to keep spirits high, and the patient waiting for a new heart, to encourage positivity and hope.  Transplant recipients will share their stories through interviews conducted in person, on the phone, and via emails and chats.  Photo opportunities will be scheduled, in order to capture the spirit and joy of the participants of this project. These stories and photos will  be compiled into a book to show the world that life continues on after a heart transplant.

The Impetus

The anti-rejection project was born out of my desire to document the transplant experience in photos. Over the last 10 years my perspective on this project has evolved. It started as a way to spotlight issues transplant patients encounter. Medical problems aside, how does one reconnect with society? What are society’s perceptions of transplantation? These are valid questions worth exploring. Over the years, I’ve been able to look back at all of the wonderful things I’ve been able to do. I’ve realized that sharing the positive side of the transplant experience and the many ways recipients benefit would be a great resource not only for my own day to day struggle, but also for other patients, both pre and post transplant.

Your Participation

Participation in the anti-rejection project is strictly voluntary. You will be given a copy of the question prior to your interview. You can choose which questions you would like to answer, and which topics you would like to cover. We also will be taking photographs during the interview sessions. The photos could be any image you would like to share from your life. If you do not wish to be photographed personally, that is your choice. Release forms will be provided during the interview.

If you have questions or concerns or would like more information, please feel free to contact Matt Perko. info@anti-rejection.com or call 216.321.5302
